Born today in 1937 - the mighty Dick Dale, King of the Surf Guitar. A Dead connection? Vince Welnick played on his Calling up the Spirits, 1996 and Better Shred than Dead, 1997 albums.

"You'll never hear surf music again..." This line from Hendrixs' Third Stone From the Sun is attributed to his mistaken information that Dick Dale had passed away from cancer. Whether this is true, who knows. I do believe that at some point Dick Dale did do a version of this song. Dick Dale and the Deltones were the inspiration for me to play guitar and form the Craptones.

May 4, 1956 - Gene Vincent and his group, The Blue Caps, recorded Be-Bop-A Lula for Capitol Records in Los Angeles. Interesting note: Vincent had written the tune only three days before he auditioned in a record company talent search that won him first place. The record was rush-released just two days later and became a rock and roll classic.

Great tune.

Dick Dale is probably the greatest surf guitarist ever, and he's still going. 70 years old this year, and he can still play some excellent music.

I know it's the wrong time of year and all - but one album my daughter and I both love is Rudy and the Surf Kings Do Christmas. It's just so much fun!

The surf certainly is up!

Check this little treasure out. The band is just funnin' around, joined by a few members of the Airplane. Jer actually asks the audience for a suggestion, which turns out to be a very cool Wipeout Jam!

Thanks Cliff, I'd never heard of this session, it was a grin from start to finish.
